A much-loved heritage winter squash, Butternut is prized for its smooth tan skin, long neck and deep orange, sweet flesh. Producing pear-shaped fruits with a small seed cavity and a high proportion of solid flesh, it is both productive and easy to prepare.

This reliable variety has become a kitchen favourite for its excellent keeping qualities and rich, nutty flavour.

Growing information

• Sow under cover in late spring or direct sow once frost risk has passed

• Grow in fertile soil in a warm, sunny position

• Vigorous trailing vines

• Harvest in autumn when skins are hard and fully coloured

Butternut is perfect for roasting, soups, purées and baking, with smooth, sweet flesh that deepens in flavour after harvest.
